Mechanical Services Design Engineer

Location: Solihull, West Midlands

The Role

I am looking for an experienced Mechanical Services Design Engineer to join an established engineering team working on commercial and industrial projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing mechanical building services designs from initial requirements through to detailed design and technical approval. You will work closely with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal project teams to ensure designs are technically robust, compliant and deliverable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical building services systems including heating, cooling, ventilation, humidity control, water services and localised drainage.
  • Produce detailed drawings, schematics and technical specifications using AutoCAD and BIM tools such as Revit.
  • Interpret client requirements and identify and raise RFIs where additional information is required.
  • Undertake heat load calculations, pipe sizing, ductwork design and plant selection.
  • Design and select Air Handling Units (AHUs) using appropriate selection software.
  • Liaise with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to select plant and equipment in line with project requirements.
  • Work closely with project and contracts teams to integrate mechanical systems into the wider building design.
  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers throughout project delivery to ensure the original design intent is maintained.
  • Prepare technical submissions for review and approval by clients and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure designs comply with UK Building Regulations, CDM requirements, CIBSE standards and relevant health, safety and sustainability requirements.
  • Work within established ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality and environmental management systems.
  • Support the development of BIM/REVIT capability within the wider engineering team.
  • Contribute to process improvement and automation initiatives, including the use of Excel, AI and other digital tools where appropriate.
About You

You will ideally have experience in mechanical building services design, preferably within commercial or industrial environments.

You should have a strong understanding of mechanical services design and be comfortable producing technical designs, calculations and documentation.

Experience with some or all of the following would be advantageous:

  • AutoCAD
  • Revit / BIM
  • Heat load calculations
  • HVAC design
  • Pipe and ductwork sizing
  • AHU selection
  • Hevacomp, IES or similar design software
  • Building Regulations and CDM
  • CIBSE standards
  • Technical submissions and design approvals

You will need to be a confident communicator who can work effectively with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams, while maintaining a strong focus on technical quality and delivery.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer looking to take responsibility for technically challenging commercial and industrial projects, while developing their expertise across mechanical building services, HVAC and environmental control systems.

The role offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative engineering environment and contribute to the continued development of design, BIM and digital engineering capabilities. Please send your CV via the system at the earliest opportunity.
