Common questions

What is the SSSTS course?
The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme is CITB's two-day course for supervisors, gangers, chargehands and team leaders — anyone responsible for a gang rather than the whole site. It covers the supervisor's legal responsibilities, risk assessments and method statements, toolbox talks, and monitoring the work. The certificate lasts five years.
Are these the real SSSTS exam questions?
No, and treat any site claiming to have them with suspicion. Official question banks are copyright and cannot be republished. These are original questions written against the same published syllabus areas, so they test the same understanding without reproducing the exam.
What is the difference between SSSTS and SMSTS?
SSSTS is for supervisors and runs two days; SMSTS is for managers and runs five. The questions differ the way the jobs do — SSSTS asks what you check, brief, stop and escalate, SMSTS asks what you plan, procure and authorise. Supervising a gang needs SSSTS; running a site needs SMSTS.
How long does an SSSTS certificate last?
Five years. Renewal is a one-day SSSTS refresher, which must be done before the certificate expires — leave it too late and you sit the full two-day course again.
Do I need a CSCS card as well?
Usually yes. SSSTS is training; the CSCS card is what gets checked at the gate. A supervisory card generally requires the relevant NVQ along with a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.
Is the SSSTS mock test free and current for 2026?
Yes, no sign-up. The questions follow the current CITB syllabus for supervisors — risk assessments and method statements, toolbox talks, behavioural safety and escalation — and are reviewed when guidance changes.
How is the SSSTS course assessed?
Across the two days by multiple-choice questions and a short written exercise, together with how you take part in the course. There is no separate exam day; the trainer assesses as you go, so arrive having read the pre-course material.
Can I use this for the SSSTS refresher?
Yes. The one-day refresher covers the same ground with more emphasis on what has changed and on supervisory judgement, which is what most of these questions test.
What do people find hardest?
The questions about when to stop work and when to escalate. They test whether you treat a live risk as something to deal with now rather than raise at the next meeting — which is exactly the judgement the course exists to build.
