Interview expected to take place in the week following shortlisting: commencing 23.11.2026
As a Trust, we have been commissioned to develop a brand-new, state-of-the-art Day Case Unit at St Luke's Hospital in Bradford. This exciting £18 million investment will provide a dedicated facility for planned surgical procedures, helping to reduce waiting times and address the backlog of patients awaiting surgery. The unit is expected to deliver approximately 5,000 day case operations each year, making a significant contribution to tackling local health inequalities, improving patient outcomes and creating new employment opportunities for people within our local communities.
Located on the existing St Luke's Hospital site, the new unit will bring together the skills and expertise of a dedicated multidisciplinary team under one roof, providing an efficient and streamlined approach to surgical care. The unit will focus on high-volume, low-complexity procedures across a range of specialties, including trauma and orthopaedics, general surgery, urology, gynaecology, plastic surgery and colorectal surgery, helping to reduce waiting times for some of the most commonly performed operations.
Main duties of the job
The purpose-built Day Case Unit will comprise two operating theatres, operating six days a week, providing a modern environment where surgical procedures can be delivered safely, effectively and efficiently. This dedicated approach will support improvements in the quality and delivery of care, reduce waiting times and enable patients to return home on the same day as their procedure.
If you are enthusiastic about being part of this exciting new development and share our commitment to delivering outstanding care to the communities of Bradford, we would be delighted to hear from you. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the development of a new surgical service within a modern, patient-centred environment.
The unit will undertake a wide range of surgical procedures, including, but not limited to, urology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, general surgery, plastics and breast surgery.
Previous experience in scrub practice would be highly desirable and warmly welcomed. However, we recognise the importance of supporting colleagues in developing their knowledge, confidence and clinical skills. A preceptorship package will be available to provide structured learning, guidance and professional development.

Job description
Job responsibilities
For successful candidates recruited ahead of the unit's planned opening in mid-2027, there may be opportunities to work at the Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) site in the interim. This will provide valuable experience, practical learning and support to help prepare colleagues for their roles within the new Day Case Unit.
We are looking for individuals who have knowledge or experience of working across different areas of the surgical pathway, alongside an understanding of surgical targets and the importance of delivering safe, timely and effective patient care. An interest in working within a high-volume, low-complexity surgical environment, together with a willingness to learn, adapt and contribute positively to the team, will be particularly valued.
The successful candidate will play an integral role within the multidisciplinary team, using specialised nursing skills and demonstrating leadership competencies to support the delivery of high-quality patient care.
The role will also involve promoting the effective and economical use of available resources, contributing to the efficient delivery of services and supporting the achievement of budgetary balance.
The postholder will be professionally accountable for their own actions and practice, working without direct supervision where appropriate, and will also be responsible for the supervision and actions of unqualified members of staff within their area of responsibility.
For further information about the role, responsibilities and essential requirements, please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification.
