How we measured it
On 5 November 2026 we ran 12 common Nigerian job searches through the Careerjet Nigeria job search API, which gathers adverts from many Nigerian job sites and employers, and recorded whether each carried a salary. Results were sorted by date, not salary, so adverts with pay were not pushed to the top.
This is the first two pages of each search, so it reflects what a job seeker sees first rather than every advert in Nigeria. Some adverts may appear in more than one search.
Common questions
- What share of Nigerian job adverts show the salary?
- About 22%. Of 1041 live Nigerian adverts we checked on 5 November 2026, 809 (78%) gave no salary at all.
- Which jobs hide the pay most?
- Engineer adverts were the worst at 93% with no salary, followed by teacher (88%). Even the most open category, hr, hid pay 69% of the time.
- Why do Nigerian employers hide the salary?
- Common reasons are wanting room to negotiate, keeping pay private from existing staff, and recruiters advertising for several clients at once. Whatever the reason, it leaves applicants unable to judge a role before they spend time and data applying.
- How do I ask about salary if the advert hides it?
- Ask the recruiter for the salary range before the first interview, politely and early: 'Could you share the budgeted range for this role?' Know what you need after tax first — the PAYE calculator shows it.
- Why does a missing salary matter?
- It wastes applicants' time and data on roles that may pay below what they need, and it is common in job scams, which avoid committing to a figure. An advert that states pay is easier to judge and to check.
